Exit rows usually come with extra legroom — but most of them don't recline. Some don't even have windows. We analyzed 563 exit row seats across 49 aircraft configurations to find the ones actually worth booking.

The exit row trade-off
Exit rows typically have 34–38" of legroom instead of the standard 30–31". That's a real upgrade — especially on longer flights. But there's always a catch.
- ✕Most don't recline. FAA rules require those seatbacks to stay upright so the exit path stays clear. This applies to all first-row exit seats on every airline.
- ✕Many don't have windows. The exit door structure replaces the window. You get a door panel instead of a view.
- ✕No underseat storage during takeoff or landing. Your bag goes in the overhead bin. Some exit rows have armrest tray tables, which narrow the seat.
- ✓Second exit rows often recline. On aircraft with two exit rows (common on narrowbodies), the rear exit row typically reclines because there's no emergency path obstruction behind it. These are usually the best seats.
Exit rows that recline
These are among the best seats in economy. Extra legroom and the ability to lean back. They almost always occur on the second of two exit rows, where the seat ahead of you can't recline into your space.

Trap rows: no recline, no legroom
The row directly in front of an exit row is usually the worst seat in economy. Your seatback is locked upright to keep the exit path clear, but you don't get any extra legroom — you have standard legroom. On some aircraft you also lose the window. These are the seats you should actively avoid.
